Studying online is fantastic. It’s more flexible, it can be cheaper, you can study at your own pace, and there is a huge range of courses to choose from, including online masters in communication management degrees from the University of Southern California. However, when you are working from home, it can be difficult to find the time, or the motivation to study. Equally, it can be difficult to switch off and relax when you aren’t leaving a physical classroom behind. Here are some fantastic tips to help you get the most out of your online studies.
Create a Study Space
Having a separate study space can make it easier to get in to the right mindset to study. It can also be an excellent way to ensure you are able to leave your studies behind and relax at the end of the day. If you don’t have the space for a home office, try to create a small office space, with a desk, in a quiet room.
Stick to a Routine
Where possible, try to implement a study routine. Have one or two days a week where you know you can get a lot of work done. Or keep the same few hours every day free for study. This makes it easier to get into the right frame of mind to study.
Study Out of the Home
Sometimes, especially when you have important exams or a deadline looming, it’s a good idea to get a change of scenery. Get away from any home stresses. If you need peace and quiet, libraries are a great option. Or, you could rent some office space.
You’ll have large goals to pass exams or meet deadlines, but it’s a good idea to make goals for the week ahead. Write down everything you want to achieve the following week. This might be a certain amount of reading, hitting a word count, or understanding something you have been struggling with. Then make a plan, and a to-do list, to help you meet these goals. Reward yourself when you do.
When working from home, it can be easy to forget to take breaks or to think “I’ll just do this last bit” and then carry on for hours. Breaks are extremely important. Take some time off, have a drink and a snack, rest your mind, and your eyes. Then return to your work feeling refreshed and alert.
Ask for Help
Remember, even when studying online, there is help available when you need it. Email your tutor if you need to. Or join study forums and chat to those going through the same. Alternately, help could be asking for time off work if you have a job, or asking for someone to look after your children. Grow, and use your support network in any way you can.
University can be very expensive, so it’s incredibly important that you make the most of it. Follow these tips and your online MCM degree should be enjoyable and, ultimately, exceptionally rewarding.
